CARVED STONE PHOTOGRAPHS & COMMISSIONS

‘Carved Stone Photographs’ are one off photographs of carved stones hidden in rivers in mountainous regions in remote parts of the world.
A stone from a river is carved with an image relating to the nature of the surrounding landscape of that country. Once returned to the river the carved stone is photographed through the surface of the water.
The final enlarged photograph represents the stone itself, a connection to the place it exists in and the extraordinary journey undertaken to discover it.
' Las Piedras Escondidas de Sudamérica' (The Hidden Stones of South America) are a series of carvings made in Bolivia and Argentina. The carved images are an interpretation based on a variation of the symbols used by the indigenous people of the Andes to represent the four elements of land, water, air and fire.
By linking the elements together, water and land being ever present as the river and the rock carved, a connection is made suggesting the evolutionary cycles which have created the surrounding landscape.

Commissions for ‘Carved stone Photographs’ offer an opportunity to own a truly unique piece of artwork. A personalised carved stone made in a part of the world that is particularly special and of significant importance to the individual. The carving could be commissioned as a tribute to an awe inspiring landscape or favourite journey, to symbolise a bond between two people or in someone’s memory.
The hidden stone will permanently remain in the stream or river in the remote landscape setting it came from and details of its exact location will only be revealed to the individuals involved in the commissioning of the work.
The final artwork, a selected enlarged digital photograph, represents a connection to the particular place and the carved stone. Should the individuals involved with the commission wish to discover the carved stone then the spectacular journey will be an intrinsic interactive part of the art experience.
Included with the commission is a series of digital photographs on a CD documenting the carved stone, its setting, surrounding landscape and written directions to the exact location.
